One of my influences is independent filmmaker Brett Mauser of Not So Sane Entertainment. Frankly, his ability to tell an entertaining story on a low budget demonstrates his talent. While I just need to imagine something for a story at the cost of words and time, Mauser’s storytelling is constrained also by physical reality and money.
His short film “No Righteous Men” (see vid below) is interesting as it was later rearranged and improved to become a scene in Mauser’s feature length film “Lady Lawman,” which is currently available to stream on Tubi.
Mauser has a habit of redoing elements of his past work or simply redoing an entire movie. This results in quality improvements thanks to better equipment, better acting, and greater production experience. Often it is because he liked something he did but knew that he could do it better without the compromises limiting that earlier version.
Within my backlog of drafted stories there may appear to be many repeated elements as I played with different choices and outcomes, thus different stories. Does that mean every story was a winner? No as maybe it took drafting a few middling stories to refine the idea to a good story. However, even in those earlier efforts there is usually a surprising gem in the dialogue. 🙂
