Some of my short stories are fantasy. Within the Selfish World story universe, I think of these as part of a legendary past, so similar to such stories in our own world where there were once imagined elves, trolls, cyclops, etc.
The last time I did a D&D campaign my character was Bang Bang, a half-orc hammer-swinging fighter. Dull witted, but cunning and tactical. He was a bit of a trickster like Odysseus. An orphan, he grew up as a camp mascot in a mercenary company; eventually, he grew into a soldier and a sergeant. While generally viewed as unintelligent, he becomes a savant on issues of combat, first aid, organization, logistics, and organization.
So far, he appears in one story. While collecting wild herbs in the forest for a local temple, he finds a dying female fighter, who he saves and then charges her for his continued protection and care as he remains a mercenary at heart. Instead of being a hack and slash tank, in this story, Bang Bang shows off his cunning as he helps the healed warrior get revenge against her former companions who abandoned her to die.
His dialogue is fun to write as he speaks simply, directly while seemingly stupid yet actually clever.
I asked Copilot for an image of Bang Bang for inspiration during editing.
