Personally, I am no talented impressionist like Tom Grossi. However, I sometimes I do need to convey flavor and dialect diversity through text in dialogues during editing.

The only character that I drafted with an accent is Bang Bang, a half-orc fighter. Lots of swapping ‘d’ for ‘th’ in spelling, not using articles in sentences, stripping out any words that aren’t essential, and focus on using more simple subject-verb construction.

Copilot says that it can help me translate standard English dialogue text into various dialects. That will help me add accents, authenticity, and differentiation for such character voices. I just need to be clear that I am respecting diversity and not stereotyping. I just don’t want a Jamaican gang member to sound redneck. 🙂

I played with Copilot a little by asking it to rephrase, “The Mexicans smuggled me over the border.” For a Russian accent, it suggested, “The Mexicans, they smuggled me across border.” For a Nigerian accent, it suggested, “The Mexicans, they carry me cross the border,” which it bragged had a Naiji flair. For Pidgeon, it suggested, “The Mexicans dem carry me go cross di border.”

Copilot did a much better job than translating back and forth between languages using Google Translate as it lacked the human imprecision.

Overall, I have identified an automated helper, but I just need to play with it. Another option to explore is creating my own special purpose character bot in Character AI.
