I did a little research on trends in female suicide.
Contrary to the Ophelia narrative, women are most likely to self-delete between 45-54 years old. Further, divorced women are 3x more likely to commit suicide than married women.
While men are 4x more likely to self delete than women, in Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program they have achieved near gender parity. When Canada joins European countries in giving the mentally ill access to MAID, it is likely that more women than men will die from MAID. The last Canadian MAID report that I read said 3% of deaths in Canada were MAID.
Extrapolating this trend, the taunt “40-80 is a long time” may not be true as some women choose to check out of life early. An unusually large cohort of unmarried women are approaching 45 years old. Meanwhile rates of unhappiness and mental illness are increasing in women when governments seem increasingly willing to call MAID healthcare. The chanted slogan of “her body, her choice” will become less about abortion rights and more about ending the lives of middle-aged women.
Personally, I remain pro-choice on both abortion and euthanasia; however, death panels in Hillarycare have been reduced to the diagnosis of a call center rep in Canada. Ironically, single women will vote for government run healthcare and it will literally kill them while calling it a medical service.
Maybe there is a fictional short story I could write from this about a 50 year old woman suffering depression who will be deleted by government healthcare. Such a story would not have a happy ending and have an anti-suicide theme. Today news reports of this issue focus on young women.
I don’t have a good track record finishing medical stories. I have an unfinished one about a man injured in an accident & his doctor turns out to be his ex-wife who helps him get an experimental treatment so he can walk again. Another is an undrafted story about a female geneticist who gave birth to a secret clone of her husband without his knowledge of her experiment; the son is injured in an accident requiring the husband to be tested as a donor, which unleashes the conflicts from revealing the secret that his son is his clone.
