The Divided Kingdom

I keep dreaming about stories only to wake in the middle of the night without being able to fall asleep. Am I the only one?

I am noting the core idea of one dream to hopefully get it out of mind for much later.

  • Inspired by Ditko’s “The Hawk & the Dove.”
  • Variation: set in a fantasy era civil war instead of Vietnam debate era, brothers are rival princes instead of superheroes, father deceased ideal instead of active mentor, in addition to peace vs war conflicting ideas would also be modernity vs tradition, backdrop is unification against internal enemies instead of a foreign one.
  • The more bellicose brother will be the younger so also often on the verge of frustrated betrayal with his thoughtful older brother, so some passionate emotionalism vs reason at play as well.
  • Their common goal is to reunite their late father’s kingdom to end the war so maybe maybe the I in Peikoff’s DIM Hypothesis with 4 other factions in civil war representing D1, D2, M1, and M2. That last point would be a stretch goal.
  • Background history would parallel D1 betrayal of the Enlightenment (I) with the rise of M1 and M2 variants to glorify defeated historical failures.
  • Older brother may try for unsuccessful coalitions with D1 and M1 factions at different times.
  • So, a story with 4 main villains instead of one while the heroic faction is often at odds over different tactics when they lose focus on the strategic goal.
  • Flaw in eldest brother is tendencies toward rationalism and a weakness to the lure of pragmatism.

Ideas for character names?

  • For the younger brother, maybe Duncan (Old English for “dark warrior”) or Einar (Scandinavian for “one warrior” or “battle leader.”)
  • For the older brother, maybe Barjona (Of Hebrew origin, meaning “son of Jonah” or “son of dove”) or Calum (Celtic name meaning “dove”).
  • Father’s name might be Axel (father of peace).

For diversity and representation sake, I should include a strong empowered woman in the story. She will be an older cousin as a Morgan Le Fey type secret villainess who is behind an M2 faction. She wants to overthrow the patriarchy so she can hold power herself as ‘it is a woman’s turn.’

Here I am starting to bare my soul to give you a preview of what I have been working on.

See “Harvest of Blood” in this site’s menu bar for a preview of a draft chapter from Boudica and The Butcher, a novel set in a future Second American Civil War.
