Recently, I drafted a new 11k words story.
The initial concept was a father showing up at his ex-wife’s apartment to pickup his daughter for weekend visitation. The ex-wife busted his balls over being a few minutes late, and threatened to not allow him to have the daughter for visitation.
He took no shit from her resulting in an argument. For the story development a key to his counterattack was that she is a slut who threw away their marriage for sex with a guy who immediately dumped her after.
In the end, visitation happens as planned. During that time, while drinking too much wine, the ex-wife cyberstalks the ex-husband’s social media where she finds content about his new girlfriend and images from that night of her daughter having a good time with her dad. The ex-wife’s loneliness and jealousy about her daughter’s relationship with ex-husband are explored.
After several weeks of this cycle repeating, she has a frustrated outburst then decides to go out to a bar where she meets Rollo, a fitness trainer. Rollo was fun to write because he is the type of man who easily seduces women by telling her exactly what she wants to hear, which is frankly no different than the desire for validation of other women in that circumstance.
Within no time, Rollo is back at her place taking her to Poundtown in a way that meets her fantasies. The twist is the next morning when she wakes up; Rollo is gone and so are her valuables, as Rollo robbed her.
She has a breakdown day after the typical pump and dump has the added element of robbery. That evening her ex-husband returns to drop off their daughter after a weekend visitation. To put it delicately, the ex-wife is physically in the same condition as when she woke up from her one-night stand.
While the father took care of the daughter’s needs, the ex-wife showered and dressed. Afterwards the daughter is sent to her room to play so the adults can talk. Slowly things are revealed and the risk that her thief of the night was alone with her keys raises a risk to their daughter of the thief’s potential return.
In the end, the ex-husband takes the daughter home with him until the ex-wife can get her locks changed. In contrast, he makes no offer to care for and protect the ex-wife. The wife is again left alone to deal with the aftermath. Rollo emptied her bank account and ran up her charge cards leaving her no money to get emergency contraception and STI testing from their wild encounter. The ex-wife realizes that she will have to beg her ex-husband for an advance on child support so the ex-wife can use money intended for her daughter to pay the emergency healthcare resulting from the ex-wife’s poor judgement.
The story is an exploration of a woman who left a caring and protective husband for the adventures of sex with strangers.
Writing this summary I thought of an ironic working title for the story, “Living Her Best Life.”
